Who We Are
Subhash Chowdhary
Founder
One-half serial entrepreneur and one-half creative thinker, I hail from Tumola (a small village in Northern India) but have called Mumbai home for a score and five plus years.
Since childhood, I've had a passion for cinema and had wanted to learn about aspects and elements of crafting stories and making cinema. Hence, once I was in the city of dreams, I sought out thespian Ashok Purang, who was also mentoring short film makers, and was involved with many International & National Film Festivals.
Finally, in 2012, I joined forces with Shaila Davda to launch Satellite Pictures, and we invited Mr Purang as Creative Producer. This collaboration resulted in the National-award winning Filmistaan (2014).
Now, with Ashok Purang at the helm, Ms Davda and I are reimagining and reinventing Satellite Pictures. The intent is to build an ongoing stream of meaningful, critically respected, heart-touching, genre-expanding content.
Cinema for me is not a way of life, it is a way for me to feel alive. And, being a part of this industry is my gift, my privilege, not a right.

Life is strong and fragile. It's a paradox... It's both things...
- Joan Jett
My life’s made of paradoxes, or perhaps, I have built my life out of them. I was born into an ultra-conservative family, but my parents gave me the freedom to fly as high as my wings could take me. On my wings—and their prayers—I soared throughout my childhood, eyes set on a distant land called entrepreneurship, where I would rule as a corporate tzar. But my heart overruled my head. I fell in love with movies and became a film producer.
I married young. Women stay in abusive marriages for their children and their future. I took a divorce to protect my son and his future. And went back to my maiden name, Dawda.
My son is my pride and joy. A brilliant graphics designer, he has crafted beautiful publicity and poster designs for many films; mine included.
I love Bollywood with its glamour and make-believe. However, I am always attracted to scripts that are unique yet universal. Ones with powerful women characters. This has earned us the respect and acclaim of festivals and the love of audiences in theatres.
Mr. Subhash Chowdhary, my mentor, and I have launched Satellite Pictures. We have some thoughtful and inspiring projects in various stages of production, and invite you to be a part of this journey.
I love making movies that I enjoy watching and take pride in sharing.
I am Shaila Dawda.
